"South Park Meets Stranger Things"
DirtBags is a 100% hand drawn graphic novel set in Lithgow, NSW, created by Americo Alvarenga and Madison Lee.
Lithgow, Australia in 2008 is a small, mountain town plagued with the supernatural and urban legends that seem to be attracted to small towns. This is no coincidence and our protagonists, June and King, are two teens who have decided to capitalise on the strange and unusual nature of their hometown by offering their humble services, however inadequate they might be, to bust some ghosts. June is a self-taught medium and empath whom with her 8-Dimensional being, 8-BALL, has big plans to make enough money to get out of Lithgow where she feels her talents are going to waste. King is June’s best friend and is cursed with the inability to die, which June is constantly putting to the test. Along with King’s bubbly sister, Caitlyn, and their red-haired, home-schooled friend, Quinn; the teens take on the paranormal elements of their town and quickly learn that it is far more nefarious than they could have imagined.
Dirtbags is Stranger Things meets South Park with a grunge and punk rock aesthetic that comes through the alternative artwork and quippy dialogue. Every paranormal encounter takes inspiration from real locations in the Blue Mountains, and anthemic songs from our youths. It plays with the concept of what most people dismiss as the overlooked and expands the idea that there is beautiful anarchy in the strange and unusual, the uncanny and the unknown; in what we lovingly call, DirtBags.
